Apple’s HomePod

My phone of choice is an iPhone 7 Plus, in my house we use the Apple TV, iPad’s and Mac’s so you could say that i’m deep in the Apple ecosystem and you would be right, so when the HomePod starts shipping later this year i will be ordering one, but why? well i already know how this will fit into my own digital lifestyle, for a start i’m firmly fixed into the Apple Music ecosystem along with lots of iTunes content i have purchased over the years, i have a number of TV shows, films and music that totals a few hundred GB but even more importantly this digital content is synced with my iPad, iMac, MacBook, Apple TV and my iPhone. Everything just works!

But what does this mean? well for a start the HomePod will replace my now very old docking station that sits next to my bed and only has the purpose of being an alarm clock ever since Apple removed the 30 pin connector that connected it to my iPhone. The HomePod will eliminate that but also adding simplicity of allowing me to set an alarm by just telling Siri “set my alarm for 3am” it will also be able to play all of my Apple Music content since i don’t (at this moment in time) have a loudspeaker to play music throughout the house. Another great thing about the HomePod is that it has the same level of security as all my other Apple devices including anonymous ID and encryption to protect privacy.

Early reviews of the HomePod have said that the sound is great and better than that of the Amazon Eco, Google Home and Sonos speakers, it’s very early to tell since it won’t be available until later this year (December 2017 to be precise) and only those who were at WWDC got the chance to view and hear the HomePod.

Now to the tech part, the HomePod will have High-excursion woofer with custom amplifier

Array of seven horn-loaded tweeters each with their own custom amplifier.

Six-microphone array for far-field Siri and room sensing

Internal low-frequency calibration microphone for automatic bass correction

Direct and ambient audio beam-forming

Transparent studio-level dynamic processing

Wi-Fi with MIMO

Available in 2 colours – black and white
